Hotel Santa Caterina - Amalfi Coast, Italy
Introduction
The Hotel Santa Caterina, a ‘grand-style’
5 star hotel, stands surrounded by flower-filled terraces and
gardens on the coast just outside Amalfi (about a ten minute walk
from the hotel to the centre of Amalfi) in the direction of
Positano. Perched on the cliff the Santa Caterina was built in the
early nineteenth century and was a favourite haunt of leading
cultural and political figures at the time.
As well as enjoying breathtaking views out
to sea and of the Amalfi coast, the guests of the Santa Caterina
have the benefits of the luxuriant vegetation of palm trees,
umbrella pines, lemon trees and bougainvillaea that adorn the
terraces beneath the hotel. Pot plants, paintings, hand-made tiles
and antique furniture give the public areas and the bedrooms a
homely feel.
You can dine under the white vaulted
ceiling of the restaurant or al fresco under the fragrant scents of
the pergola of lemon. The menus are very good value (from about
Euros 50 per person) and the cuisine is based on fresh, local
produce with lots of fish and seafood. (Please note that the
restaurant is closed in January and February).
In the distance is the sparkling of the
sea and the coastline of the Bay of Salerno. The hotel has its own
man-made beach and swimming pool by the sea, reached by lift from
the hotel and where a wide variety of light meals and pizzas are
served at lunch-time. Most bedrooms, which vary in size, have
balcony or terrace and all have private bathroom decorated with
specially designed tiles. It is probably well worth upgrading to
the deluxe room with front sea view to make the most of the
dramatic location of the hotel. We recommend the Santa Caterina
highly for a relaxing stay and a friendly, cosy atmosphere.
