Verona Opera Festival - Due Torri Hotel Baglioni
Introduction
The rather elegant and grand hotel Due Torri
is centrally situated in Verona opposite the historic church of
Sant'Anastasia. It is about five minutes' walk from the Piazza
delle Erbe and about ten minutes' walk from the Arena, where every
year the renowned Verona Opera Festival takes place.
The hotel
The hotel was rebuilt in 1958 on the site of
an old hotel that closed at the end of the 19th century, although
originally dating from the 14th century when it was used by the
ruling Scaligeri family as their guesthouse. During the 19th
century the hotel was host to a number of illustrious visitors,
including Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, Vittorio Emanuele II and
Garibaldi. When the hotel was refurbished this century, it was to
the style of the 19th century that the designers turned and today
the furniture of the hotel, particularly that of the bedrooms,
reflects the various styles of that century, being furnished with
many pieces of authentic Veronese furniture. Today this style sits
happily with comfortable modern bathrooms. Room service is
available. The hotel has a comfortable, rather lived-in feel as
well as being an historic and grand building. There is a
restaurant, All' Aquila and a bar and lounge. The grandest hotel in
Verona. Highly recommended.
Verona Opera Festival
The annual Verona Opera Festival has taken
place in the city’s Roman arena since 1913. The arena was built
around two thousand years ago to satisfy the people’s desire to
watch games and gladiatorial combat, and has been in almost
continuous use since then. The festival features opera, ballet and
classical music and attracts new and established names from around
the world.
The 2008 festival will run from 20 June to 31
August 2008 and will feature performances of Nabucco, Aida, Tosca,
Carmen, Rigoletto, and Gala Romeo and Juliette.
Tickets cost from £31 to £176.
