Opera Festival - Macerata, Italy
Factfile
Opera Festival Performances
A new trend at
Macerata is to link the three operas and passionate natures. This
year’s theme seems to be women who bring about their own downfall
by their passion and loose morals – Carmen, Manon Lescaut and most
sensationally of all, Salome.
Salome by Richard Strauss
Strauss's one-act opera is based on the play by Oscar Wilde about
Salome, the spoilt and willful daughter of Herod.
Manon Lescaut by Puccini
Puccini's third opera and his first great success. Forced to choose
between the love of one man and her love of money, Manon tries to
have it all and loses everything.
Carmen by Bizet
The proud gypsy Carmen needs no introduction save to say that her
willful nature and great pride drive the man who really loves her
to murder her at the gates of the bullring in Seville.
