Opera Festival - Macerata, Italy
Introduction
This wonderful festival is held every summer in the historic
town of Macerata in the relatively little known Marches region of
south-east Italy. Performances are given in the impressive Arena di
Sferisterio, an outdoor venue with a superb acoustic.
Since the 1980’s, Macerata has been high on the list of true opera
lovers from all over Europe. Unlike Verona, which relies heavily on
the most popular operas each season, Macerata manages to fill its
vast arena with a dedicated and appreciative audience for a clever
mix of popular and lesser known works.
Less popular, but just as beautiful as its more fashionable
neighbours, Umbria and Tuscany, the countryside of Le Marche is a
blend of vast open agricultural land, pretty, traditional hilltop
towns, and wonderful open views, many of them extending to the
Adriatic.
Even the smallest towns have fine art galleries. Lorenzo Lotto
and Crivelli had strong associations with Le Marche and a number of
their best works are on display here. Beniamino Gigli was born in
the town of Recanti which, appropriately for an opera holiday, is
where this tour is based.
