Opera Festival - Macerata, Italy
Itinerary
We fly to Bologna and transfer to Recanati
where we stay at the delightful 3 star La Ginestra. This family
owned hotel welcomes the party each summer. It has just thirty
bedrooms and the food served is strong on tradition and quality. We
will dine here on those evenings when no opera is being
performed.
Macerata is a thirty minute drive away and on opera nights we will
have time for a leisurely independent dinner. Our tour will begin
with a walk around Recanati. We will see the Villa Coloredo-Mels
with its paintings by Lotto and the museum dedicated to the life
and work of Recanati's most famous son – Gigli. There will be a
visit to Loreto, an important centre of pilgrimage where we see
more mysterious Lotto paintings.
Another day will be spent in Urbino – the ‘ideal Renaissance
hilltop town’ created by the Duke of Montefeltro. We see the famous
picture collection in the Palazzo Ducale including works by Uccello
and Piero della Francesca, the house where Raphaele was born and
the Oratory of San Giovanni Battista where we see the vivid and
moving frescoes depicting the life of St. John.
Some time will be spent in Ascoli Piceno where
the coolly elegant Piazza del Popolo is considered by many to be
the finest in Italy. We will also visit a superb example of an 18th
Century Italian garden.
One day will be spent enjoying the seemingly endless jewels that
form the necklace of hilltowns throughout the region including
Tolentino and Camerino.
