Introduction

The Vignale Estate lies at one end of the village of Radda in Chianti, and in its spacious grounds the great Chianti Classico is still produced in abundance. The hotel has been subtly and very tastefully converted from the estate’s 19th century stone manor house, whose original structure has remained unaltered. Although the hotel is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the centre of the village, its ’back garden’ is the undisturbed open countryside of the Radda Valley, with its patchwork fields, vineyards and olive groves, and this is the view that most of the rooms here enjoy.

The hotel

The interiors are cosy, yet elegant, and the hand-stencilled ceilings, pictures and murals on the walls, and oriental rugs complement the pretty sitting rooms, which have striking original features such as grand fireplaces, alcoves and wooden beams. Behind the manor house, a flower-clad courtyard leads out to the large pool in a wonderfully evocative setting, overlooking the splendid valley below. In fine weather, breakfast is taken in the shade of a leafy pergola; alternatively the house’s original cellar, with an arched brick ceiling and terracotta floors, is used as the breakfast room.

At the hotel’s winery, guests can taste the very best in regional wines and food is also served here. The main restaurant, also named Vignale, is situated 300 metres away and its excellent Tuscan cuisine attracts local Italians as well as guests of the hotel. The charming bedrooms, situated in two buildings, overlook the valley or the hotel’s gardens and mirrors, pictures and elegant wooden furniture offset their pale walls. Connoisseurs of good food and wine will greatly appreciate this sophisticated country hotel.
