Introduction
The hotel
One of the most charming, romantic and
characterful hotels in Italy, the Villa di Monte Solare is a small,
privately-owned country house run as an hotel of just 28 rooms. The
hotel is set in its own grounds of formal gardens, wooded hills,
vines and olive groves and its location is stunning as it sits upon
a low hill which affords views of the gently rolling landscape of
northern Umbria and across to nearby Lake Trasimeno. The hotel
exudes charm, warmth and high quality of service and
accommodation.
Villa di Monte
Solare consists of three buildings; the main villa which has
ten rooms and renovated stone cottages (one an ancient olive mill
and the other a farmhouse) nearby which house the other rooms and
suites. The rooms in the villa are a true delight with large wooden
doors and antique and original furniture, heavy and wooden and
utterly in keeping with the regional flavour. Floors are
terracotta, there are murals and original fireplaces. The rooms in
the two houses, the Olivaia and the Casa dei Gelsi are slightly
larger but enjoy beamed ceilings and wooden floors. Terracotta pots
overflowing with flowers or shrubs are abundant throughout the
grounds.
There are two swimming pools, two breakfast
rooms and a restaurant that is in the main villa. There is also a
tennis court in the grounds. The restaurant has an ambience that is
both rustic and refined; it was associated from ancient times with
the cult of Apollo, the sun god. Traditional Italian cooking is
served and there is an excellent cellar of Umbrian wine.
The Villa Monte Solare offers an enticing
combination of beautiful natural location and scenery, historic and
well-maintained buildings, carefully looked after grounds and pools
and a charming welcome. We recommend it very highly. An ideal place
in Umbria for long stays in particular or as part of a two centre
holiday with other regions.
