Freewheeling in the Inca Heartlands -
Mountain Biking Machu Picchu trek
Introduction
Combine mountain biking in the Andes with the
classic Inca Trail Machu Picchu trek.
A challenging 6-day mountain biking adventure
takes us from the highland valleys around Cusco, across paramo
uplands and on to the lush upper valleys of the Amazon jungle.
Returning by mountain bike to the atmospheric
Inca town of Ollantaytambo, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, we
then trek for four days along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the
Lost City of the Incas.
The Andes
Our vehicle-supported mountain bike route
takes us via ancient Inca sites. We cycle through remote mountain
communities above 4,000 metres. There are great views of peaks
before we descend to the lower Andean valleys.
The Amazon
The climate becomes increasingly warm and
humid; the many streams we encounter provide refreshing showers. We
reach the jungle town of Quillabamba at 1,000 metres. Our return
route allows a 1,500 metre descent to Ollantaytambo in the Sacred
Valley.
Inca Trail
After a day off we set off on the four-day
trek to Machu Picchu. On the last day we arrive at the Sun Gate and
catch the magnificent ruins. We return to Cusco by train and relax
before flying to Lima.
