Which employs 90% of the body’s muscles

Mountain bikes

The vigilius also offers guests mountain bikes which they can make use of in Lana or the nearby villages of Burgstall, Gargazon, Tscherms and Völlan. Mountain bikes are an excellent way to discover the countryside and keep fit and from idyllic blossom-strewn paths and orchards to demanding Alpine tours there is something for everyone.

Hiking

The hotel also provides guests with hiking sticks and rucksacks ensuring that they can enjoy the villages of Lana, Burgstall, Gargazon, Tscherms, Vigiljoch and Völlan to the full. There are also hiking weeks organised by the local tourism authority which take place between April and May.

Some recommended itineraries are the the route from Lana to Völlan to Platzers (3 miles and 4 hours’ medium to strenuous walk uphill). This walk is recommended between June and mid October. From Mitterlana join the Brandis water channel pathway and then follow the route marked 1a.

Walking along the Gampen Strasse and passing the St Georg Church, turn left along pathway 1a and continue as far as the village centre of Völlan at an altitude of approximately 700 metres. Turn left into the Badlweg, marked no 10 and walk on through the woods to Völlaner Badl (restaurant and spa baths). Continue along this route on a steeper woodland pathway up to Platzers (approximately 1,280 metres).

One way back is to continue the tour along pathway no 4 to Völlaner Joch (approximately 1,640 metres) and then on to the Jagd-Hütte. The pathway marked no 3 leads back to Völlan via the Gallhöfe and Grubenhof. It is also possible return to the starting point by bus (Gampen-Pass - Lana).

An alternative itinerary is the route from Lana to Pawigl to Vigiljoch (3 miles and 4 hours’ ascent, medium to strenuous). This walk is recommended from when the snow melts in spring through to autumn.

The route begins at the Falschauer bridge at Oberlana next to Hotel Teiss. Follow the old Braunsberg Weg no 34, which leads past Schloss Braunsberg castle and the St Magnus Church at Gagers. After crossing the Ultner Strasse and the Pawigler Strasse, the route leads steeply uphill from the snack bar Greitwies to Pawigl and to the upper station of the Vigiljoch cable car. At this point you can enjoy the breathtaking view of the Adige/Etsch valley and the Dolomites.

Continuing along the same route the pathway leads lightly uphill through larch and fir woods to the St Vigilius Chapel and the Vigiljoch ridge. Energetic walkers can continue from there along a number of pathways, eg. to the Naturnser Alm (approximately 1,920 metres) and even to the Hochwart peak (2,608 metres).

A third recommended route is the walk from Vigiljoch to Tscherms (5 miles and 3 hours’ fairly strenuous walk, requiring stamina due to the long downhill walk). This walk covers a difference in elevation of 1,170 metres and is recommended for the spring and autumn. From the Vigilius Mountain Resort follow the pathway no 31 and then no 33 to the Hofer-Hof. The route continues through orchards and vineyards to the Schloss Lebenberg castle (open to visitors) and then to Tscherms.
