Introduction
The sprawling metropolis of Buenos Aires is home to over
one-third of the country’s population and an even greater portion
of its economic output. Founded in 1580, Buenos Aires is
today one of the largest cities in South America. Also known
as the city that never sleeps, as its many and varied around-the
clock attractions never fail to surprise and impress first-time
visitors and are a source of recurring pleasure for those returning
to the city.
This trip starts with a 4-hour introductory tour of the elegant
turn-of-the-century districts that earned Buenos Aires the
soubriquet of the Paris of South America. From the charming cobbled
alleys and colonial architecture of San Telmo all the way along the
leafy avenidas to the historically fascinating Recoleta Cemetery,
you will discover the facts, stories and anecdotes that make up the
colourful tapestry of the history of Buenos Aires.
You then have two days at leisure to experience polo practice
with one of the local polo schools or estancias. This will be
classed as a “polo day”. This visit is designed in such a way that
in a few hours, you can participate in the exciting world and
backstage of the sport of kings. Enjoy the terrific speed of the
horses, the speed of the polo players and all the glamour of the
game of polo. The “polo day” offers you the unique opportunity of
discovering the world of this passionate sport that dazzles
everyone. Only 45 minutes from town you can experience how the best
polo in the world is taught and played.
On Sunday the 9th December, the finals of the Argentina Polo
Open Championships take place. The Campeonato Argentino Abierto de
Polo Spanish for Argentine Polo Open Championship is the most
important international polo championship at club level, that takes
place every year since 1893 at the Catedral del Polo in the Palermo
in Buenos Aires. It's organised by the Asociacion Argentina
de Polo (Argentine Polo Association). The Campo Argentino del Polo,
popularly known as the 'Cathedral of Polo', is a multi-use stadium
in Buenos Aires. The stadium, opened in 1928, holds 30,000 people
and is located in Palermo. The Campo hosts the annual Argentine
Polo Open Championship, a highlight of the international polo
season.
Polo was originally brought to Argentina by the British at the
end of the 20th Century. The locals soon took up
the game as many of them were brought up on a horse and so a game
on horseback naturally attracted them. Nowadays, the upkeep of
horses (a regular player needs approx. 20 horses) and playing kit
is expensive, so the game is for the rich and upper middle
classes. It is locally an amateur game. All the top
players are invited abroad and are paid as professionals.
Argentine players and polo ponies are considered the best in the
world and both are very sought after.
Polo is available year round, however during the months of
October, November and December all the big polo championships take
place and visits can be arranged to attend these.
