Brazilian Surf School
Introduction
Itacaré is situated in a coastal region of the state of Bahia,
Brazil, where the shallow continental shelf allows the ocean waves
to reach the coast with consistency, impact and unbeatable force,
better than anywhere else on the whole northeast coast of
Brazil.
Because of this, Itacaré is becoming one of
the best tourists spots for surfers from all over the world
visiting Brazil.
Itacaré receives good waves all year around.
The climatic conditions are constantly changing guaranteeing good
surfing conditions. Great swells can come during any season.
Underwater trenches and Geographical conditions make Itacaré one of
the best places in Brazil to practice surfing. The water's
temperature is always warm between 23 and 30 degrees Celsius. A
rash guard is necessary to guarantee more hours of surfing on the
colder days (when there discomfort between the warm water and the
cold wind may happen) as well as protection against the sun on the
hot days.
Surfing arrived in Itacaré around 1974,
brought by surfers from Salvador who searched for spots with good
waves to surf on. These surfers had already experienced the waves
on the north coast of Bahia and also Ilhéus. But there was still a
place to be found where the waves were stronger and more perfect.
After studying a map and visualizing the mouth of The River Conta
at Itacaré, they decided to make an expedition to the river.
Trekking along the road full of holes and rocks that circled
through the jungle, and after hours of travelling thinking they
were lost, they spotted the ocean and the town of Itacaré emerged
between the ocean and the Atlantic rain forest lost and forgotten
in time.
When they finally arrived at the beach, they
could not believe the size and perfection of the waves. The jungle
scenery and the humid climate revealed that it was a special place,
and after days of surfing these perfect waves they went back to
Salvador and told a few other surfers what they had found.
Slowly, the best surfers of Bahia at the time,
left for Itacaré and encountered the waves of their dreams. They
decided to move to Itacaré to live next to the magical waves they
had found. The constant trips that these pioneers made to Itacaré
motivated other surfers towards what was already called at the
time, the Bahian Hawaii. At first, these travelling surfers camped
on the beaches and stayed in the homes of fisherman, since there
were no inns or special lodging for local tourism
Little by little, small inns began to emerge
and the influx of surfers increased. Various surfers moved into
town, looking for a healthier life and proper waves to practice
their sport. Local and state contest began to take place at
Tiririca beach. The Itacaré Surfing Association (A.S.I.) was
created and the tourism related to surfing became the main backer
for the economical rebirth of Itacaré
Learning to surf in Itacare these days is
learning to surf in a truly special and magical place with the
genuine article.
