Introduction

Along the central coast of British Columbia, where the Canadian Coast Range meets the Pacific Ocean, lies a wilderness known and visited by few. Glaciers ice the summits of the peaks, spawning rivers that trace a path to the sea through ancient forests of cedar, hemlock and fir.

The waters and woods of the Bella Coola Valley have sheltered British Columbia wildlife populations for millennia. Salmon, eagles and grizzlies, totemic animals of coastal native peoples, are still abundant here, evocative of nature that is both primal and arresting. We are immersed in it, on this rare adventure into the Canadian wild.

Journal Entry: The Difference

'Flying into Bella Coola, British Columbia, I was reminded of fairy tales of the European Alps. The white-topped mountains ascended so sharply that it seemed like another continent, and I half expected to find an oompah band in lederhosen waiting at the end of the runway. But there is a difference between the natural beauty of this out-of-the-way region and the Alps: the wildlife.

In this remote part of North America, I saw bald eagles perched in trailside trees, mountain goats hugging perilous cliffs, and wolves running in dried riverbeds. And I saw grizzlies. Depending on the time of the year, grizzlies can be found anywhere from the stony shores of the myriad salmon-filled rivers all the way to the slopes of the brilliant mountainsides. It was the grizzlies that made the difference.'
