Introduction
Kingdom of the Monarchs - The Amazing
Migration of 300 Million Butterflies!
One of the world’s most astounding natural events occurs each
year in North America, featuring one of its most unlikely
creatures, the delicate monarch butterfly. Every November, up to
300 million monarchs set flight on a remarkable 2,500-mile journey
from the northeastern U.S. and Canada to their ancestral wintering
grounds in the volcanic mountains of central Mexico.
Until recently, the location of their breeding grounds remained
a mystery. How an infant generation of monarch butterflies finds it
anew each year is still an enigma. See their amazing migration and
photograph the monarch butterfly in its natural habitat on this one
of a kind Mexican expedition. Join our small group expedition to
experience this moving phenomenon, enhanced by Mexico’s premier
naturalist guides. It’s Mexico nature travel at its best.
Journal Entry: Butterflies in
concert
'I was determined to finally find the answer
to a question that has troubled me since I first read of the
phenomenon of the monarchs: What do 300 million butterflies sound
like? Climbing from our vehicle at our staging point, a small
number of butterflies fluttered about. Beautiful to be sure, but I
could not hear them.
Along the dusty trail, my head began to pound
with excitement as the numbers increased, but my feet and my heart
were what I heard most. At the roosting area, the tree limbs seemed
heavy with butterflies, something I never thought possible.
Overwhelmed, I sat down on a rock. When the sun appeared from
behind a cloud, shining through the broad forest and onto a sea of
orange-black wings, the butterflies moved as one, millions of them
extending their wings to draw the warmth of the sun. Then, in
symphony, they took flight in a whir of flapping grandeur.
Together, 300 million butterflies sound like an airborne
ballet.'
