Wolves, Caribou and Northern Lights - Canada
Canada Northern Lights Wilderness Holiday
Introduction
An active wilderness adventure based holiday in Quebec's
northern regions through the Taiga forest latitudes, on the banks
of the 'La Grande River'. Witness the epic migration of 800,000+
Caribou by snowmobile, snowshoe, cross-country ski and flight
through this stunning region, but relax at night in the comfort of
a wilderness lodge, resting your tired limbs in the sauna and enjoy
a three course meal, before witnessing the night sky phenomenon of
Aurora Borealis, Northern Lights.
The Taiga forest stretches around the world between the 50th and
54th parallel, so named the Boreal forest in this remote region of
Quebec, reached by a light aircraft 2.5 hours away from Montreal.
Quebec's taiga region and its abundant wildlife can be experienced
here in a beautiful winter setting. Throughout the James Bay
territory of northern Quebec and towards the sub-arctic areas of
Quebec's tree line, century old black spruce trees, dwarfed by the
harsh climatic conditions, take hold and litter the landscape,
forming the largest mono specific forest of the world. One million
migrating caribou, arriving from Quebec's northern regions, winter
in this area seeking out their main sustenance, Cladonia
(Lichens).
Throughout the week, you will take part in some exhilarating
activities whilst in search if these elegant travellers, on their
seemingly endless 6,000 km migration. Observe the timber wolf as he
waits for the caribou, find the hard to spot willow ptarmigan
camouflaged in white and the impressive snowy owl. Your base is the
Mirage Lodge, situated on the banks of the majestic 'La Grande
River' in a tranquil setting with a warm welcome, tasty food and
relaxing sauna, spa and open fire.
There will be flexibility in the programme to make the best of
local climatic conditions, as you take on the challenge of tracking
down and finding the northern Caribou everyday and head off into
the vast wilderness of the Taiga region to get a sighting, in turn
by snowmobile, snowshoe, cross country ski and flight. There is
always the chance that you may get a glimpse the Timber wolf as
they lurk in the trees waiting to pounce. As there is one wolf to
every forty Caribou this may be easier than you think (or hope!).
The highly experienced local guides will decide which days are best
for which activity, to maximise your enjoyment and help you learn
about further flora and fauna.
Snowmobiles are perfectly made for these conditions, and your
adrenalin is sure to start pumping. Before getting going on the
snowmobiles you will be fully kitted out and receive detailed
instruction. Although you will experience low temperatures, the air
is very dry so it will not seem as cold as the thermometer
suggests. The gear will help protect you from the cold and also
stray branches when riding through thick forest. Riding a
snowmobile can take a little bit of getting used to but with a one
guide to two clients ratio, you'll never be far from help and it
will not take long for your confidence on the machines to
build.
