L’Auberge du Château de Berne - Wine Tour - Provence, France

Itinerary

Day 1

After landing at Marseille, pick up your hire car at the airport and drive to l'Auberge du Château de Berne (1 hour 15 minutes). You will be greeted at the hotel with a complimentary glass of wine from the Château to savour before dinner in the hotel's restaurant, specialising in local produce.

Day 2 – Le Château de Berne

Buffet breakfast at the hotel is included. In the morning, take a guided stroll through the vineyards of the Château de Berne. The Château's white grapes are Ugni Blanc, Sémillon, Rolle and Clairette, and their red and rosé are Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre and Carignan. Benefit from the advice of the Château's experts on a tour of its cellars and dedicated wine school, and a guided tasting of some of their wines. They can also advise on how to select and store wines for your own cellar. After lunch, borrow bicycles from the hotel to get out into the countryside, or take advantage of the hotel's spa treatments. A programme of cultural events, featuring local produce, art and craft fairs or musical concerts, runs throughout the year, and attending one of these events is a fascinating way of gaining insight into Provencal traditions. A concert at the hotel's open-air theatre is ideal to bring the day to a close.

Day 3 – Around the region

After breakfast, drive to Domaine de France, a producer of Côtes de Provence wines, where you will be welcomed by the Brun family and treated to a tour of the vineyards. Enjoy an expert tasting in their cellars and receive a complimentary bottle of their wine. For lunch, stop at a restaurant on the way to the mediaeval hilltop town of Flayosc. You could also spend your afternoon visiting the perfume factory in Grasse. Whatever you choose to do, it's worth making the effort to end up in Lorgues for dinner at the Michelin-starred restaurant Bruno, which specialises in the preparation of truffles.

Day 4 – Provençal cuisine

Enjoy your breakfast, then visit the bustling local produce market in Lorgues, a few miles from the hotel. You will be accompanied by Stéphane Demurtas, the head chef at the Château de Berne, who will give you the full benefit of his gastronomic knowledge of the region. Take your time over lunch at one of the restaurants in the town before returning to the Château's cookery school for a class with Stéphane in the afternoon. To round off your trip, what better way to create a memorable evening than by lingering over a dinner that you yourself have helped prepare, accompanied by some excellent wines from the cellars of the Château?

Day 5

After breakfast, make your way back to the airport at Marseille.
